D. Pedro I

The last portrait of the emperor d. Pedro I, whilst in Brazil, before abdicating the throne in favour of his son d. Pedro II. The oil painted by Simplício  Rodrigues de Sá and recently purchased by the Imperial Museum at an auction in London, shows the Emperor wearing one of his imperial costumes, showing amongst the decorations the Order of the Rose, founded by him in 1829 on the occasion of his marriage to d. Amélia de Leuchtemberg, Brazil's second Empress. Simplício  Rodrigues de Sá, a portuguese painter that arrived in Rio de Janeiro in 1820 was a disciple of Jean Baptiste Debret and, in 1825, he was nominated portrait painter to the imperial chamber.
