During the lengthy periods spent in Petrópolis, the Emperor d. Pedro II dedicated himself to reading and study, or else correspondence with friends, intelectuals and scientists of his time. This study was his favourite refuge, where he spent the greater part of the day and even of the night. By the window there is a telescope that he used to observe the sky. On his desk the first telephone, that he brought to Brazil subsequent to meeting graham bell at the Philadelphia International Exhibition, in the United States in 1876. The telephone connected the Palace of São Cristóvão to the Imperial Farm of Santa Cruz. In the centre of the room the emperor's chaise longue and, on the background wall,  the picture of the empress d. Teresa Cristina Maria, sent to him on the occasion of his marriage contract, which took place by proxy, in 1843. The empress, daughter of the King of Naples and Two Sicilies was painted, with Vesuvius in the background, by José Correia De Lima.
